The construction of the artist’s studio at it’s coastal location supports and fuels the core of her practice by providing a protected dedicated work base. All research, artistic activity including commissions is generated from this facility. Adjacent to the studio, the artist and her partner have created an ongoing garden and landscape project in which they produce fruit, vegetables and herbs throughout the year.

Project Summary

Project : Home Garden
Location : Argyll
Sector : Private
Duration : 1998 - ongoing

In spite of severe winter gales and frequent rainfall, the west facing, well draining soil is fertile, enhanced with plenty of garden compost and seaweed. Summer saw great crops of apples and pears, red and black currants, gooseberries and rhubarb, strawberries and raspberries. The growing season of the already prolific summer salad crops has been extended with the use of a gale proof greenhouse. Reliable vegetables include potatoes, onions, beans and pumpkins with kale, cabbage, swedes and leeks standing through most of the winter.

The hard landscape connects the house, studio, greenhouse and garden. Once the retaining walls, terraces and paths are complete, further raised beds will be built.
