Project Summary

Project : Freeman Hospital
Client : Newcastle upon Tyne NHS Trust
Partners : Laing O'Rourke, Charlie Bear Charity and
Hazel Colqhoun
Location : Newcastle upon Tyne
Sector : Public
Duration : 2004 - 2008

Influenced by the way in which sunlight studies echoed the feeling of many patients that darkness invaded light during diagnosis and treatment, the NCCT design aspires to create a life affirming environment. Big pink granite raised planting pods, filled with light level specific, seasonal planting in warm vibrant colours, surround a central cluster of multistem white birches swathed in a cloud of tiny white lights.

The Renal Courtyard also evolved from sunlight studies and from the patient need for simultaneous interest and privacy. A generous slab of grey granite paving, embedded with a grid of floor lights, is surrounded by a deep curve of planting dominated by apricot, orange and rust colours which thrive in both sun and shade.
