Eclipses and Tides is a body of work begun as large, heavily textured black bitumen paintings made during the 1990's. They were created in response to a number of widely documented maritime oil spills and military conflicts which caused massive environmental pollution of seas, land and wilderness.

Project Summary

Project : Eclipses and Tides
Client : Gallery Work
Location : Artist Studio
Duration : 1990 to present

The dark and opaque substantial quality of this early work has developed into an ongoing series of photographs inspired by the frequently translucent ethereal appearance of water and light distinctive to the west of Scotland coastal landscape surrounding the studio.

The ‘Black Paintings’ were exhibited at Walsall Art Gallery and at Ikon in Birmingham. Many of the photographs have been exhibited as large framed handprints and others as commissioned by the Pittenweem Festival and Bonhoga Gallery on Shetland as installations of wall sized projected images with sound, in collaboration with Kyra Clegg and Paul Keatley.
